No Such Thing as Racism
No Such Thing as Racism… (There is a root cause)
I was having a conversation with my wife the other day and I received a revelation that there is no such thing as racism. I know this statement sounds crazy, absurd, and possibly offensive (especially to those who have experienced “racism”). Please read all the way through before you formulate your rebuttal to this statement. I am not saying racism doesn’t exist, nor am I saying racist actions don’t occur, but I am saying there is a deeper root- something we are overlooking that causes racism.
Lets look at a couple of definitions:
Race– a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
Racism–a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
Race is based on a person’s physical appearance or ethnic background. So in order to be racist, there are few criteria that has to exist. One has to believe in the social invention which we call race. The idea of race is an invention that some credit Johann Friedrich Blumenbach with. He was a German physician and anthropologist who came up with the racial classification system that we employ today. In 1795, he divided all humans into five groups, defined both by geography and appearance. In his order, the Caucasian variety, for the light-skinned people of Europe and adjacent parts of Asia and Africa; the Mongolian variety, for most other inhabitants of Asia, including China and Japan; the Ethiopian variety, for the dark- skinned people of Africa:
- the Caucasian race or white race
- the Mongolian or yellow race
- the Malayan or brown race
- the Ethiopian, or black race
- the American or red race.
A contemporary scholar, Ashley Morgan, made a statement in opposition to the idea of race. “I argue that race was institutionalized beginning in the 18th century as a worldview, a set of culturally created attitudes and beliefs about human group differences.” Unfortunately, many doctors including Dr. Samuel Morton, supported the theory that Blumenbach came up with. Morton stated in the 1830’s that he measured the insides of crania collected from many populations. He offered “evidence” that the Negro had a smaller brain than whites, with Indians in-between.
Sorry for taking you back to history class, but the aspect of this system that is most appalling is the order of the classification. According to Blumenbach, a certain race is the superior due to their skin, physical structure, and environment. Sadly, these are the same criteria we use to distinguish between humans by comparing each other according to our race when in actuality there is no such thing.
God created all men with variation; there is not one human with the same exact DNA structure, fingerprint, or voice. This means there are no people who are exactly alike. Any tool that used to exalt one above another is an attempt to create inferiority in another person. This does not just exist within different ethnic groups. There are more privileged whites that look down upon whites that may not have as much and they are classified as white trash. Then you have blacks in different classes who look down upon blacks from the “Ghetto”. We can keep going, you have privileged Asian Americans that considered Asians that are new to America “Fobs” or Fresh off the boat. Then you have Latin Americans who discriminate against those that are immigrants dubbing them “Wetbacks” So what we face in society is not a racism issue, it is a superiority/ inferiority complex that strives to turn differences into divisions. Although God created diversity to show His power and His glory, we humans have taken it to divide and segregate one another. If you consider yourself equal with anyone you come in contact with, you are not a racist. The only way one can become racist is if he or she feels superior and consciously identifies someone else as inferior. We all belong to one race and that is the human race.
