Why Setting Goals is Not Enough to Succeed…

Why Setting Goals is Not Enough to Succeed…

goals Plans Success

I have set a lot of ambitious goals for my life and I used to believe in goal setting until I realized I wasn’t reaching my goals. Anyone who has achieved any level of substantial success will tell you the importance of goal setting but, most fail to you tell you the most significant component that makes obtaining goals possible. You are probably familiar with the method I am going to share but you probably glossed over it due to its simplicity.

The key to success is not setting goals; it’s creating a plan to achieve those goals (this is big!). Antoine de Saint-Exupery a French writer from the 1900’s said it best, “A goal without a plan is just a wish” That is so good I need to say it a gain, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” What is a wish? Dictionary.com describes it as: something that cannot or probably will not happen. Wow, that’s harsh- a wish is something that is not likely to happen and many of us have been wishing instead of planning. We have been hoping our goals will magically happen by writing them down without a plan of action. I was guilty of this also but in 2012 I put my goals to death and brought my plans to life. Will you do the same?

We do not want to repeat history so we must learn how to properly plan for our goals. First of all, what is a plan? The dictionary defines a plan as: a set of actions that have been thought of as a way to do or achieve something. A good plan is tied to deliberate thought with strategic action steps. So having a goal will not cut it. We need to have a plan written out and accompanied with immediate action.

Even God is more concerned about your plans than your goals. In Proverbs 16:3 the bible says “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your PLANS will succeed.” (Emphasis added) Also look what is says in Habakkuk 2:2. “Write the vision and make it plain so that the person who reads it may run with it”. So I know from these scriptures and many others that God wants us to have a plan and not just a goal. If 2013 is going to be better for you, its going to be better according to the plans you set- not the resolutions, goals, or wishes. If you would like a FREE action plan template please email us at beingencouraged@gmail.com and we will gladly give you one. We are here to encourage you to be all that God wants you to be!

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. — Romans 1:20
