How to Remain Pure Until You get Married

(4 Practical steps for remaining pure)

Everything good starts with a decision just as everything bad starts with a decision. No one accidentally finds themselves with an addiction to sex, porn, masturbation or any sexual vice. It all started from a decision. From a young boy into man hood I have been bombarded with sexual images, lustful cravings, and constant temptations. I’m sure most men and women can agree they have had to battle to remain pure and keep their minds clear of lustful thoughts. The battle is not easy but it is feasible to overcome with God on your side, the right tools, and proper support.

1.    Make a decision to remain pure.

The day I gave my life to the Lord I made a commitment to stop doing the things that displeased God. At first I thought it was about just stopping the drugs, sex, and lying. But as I grew to learn about the Lord it wasn’t the acts that God was most concerned about, He was more concerned about my heart towards Him.  As it says in Matthew 22:37 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” If you make a decision that you want to please God with your heart mind and soul, you don’t need to worry about the acts you will naturally get that right because your heart is striving after righteousness. Once you have made a decision to please God your actions will follow in purity.

2.    Read scriptures on purity often.

The desire to remain pure must first be a desire to remain pure unto God rather than unto man. If one is pure unto God they will automatically be pure unto man, but if one is pure unto man that does not necessarily mean one is pure unto God. Man can be deceived but God can’t so we have to keep a constant mental note that He is with us in all we do good and bad, in the light or in the dark. The key to maintaining purity is by maintaining a pure mind and this can only be done with the power of Gods Word, which represents Gods thoughts. So if we want to have a pure mind we need to develop the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:15  Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!” This scriptures hits me every time and reminds me that my body is not mine just like your body is not yours. If you read scriptures like these often lust will have a very hard time sinking in.

3.    Find out your weaknesses and establish boundaries.

Beside God no one knows you like you know you. If you were your enemy what trap would you set for your self to ensnare you into sin. Knowing your weaknesses is one of the best defensive strategies against impurity. For example before my wife an I got married we decided there would be no kissing until that glorious day (You better believe I was on her like white one rice lol). As innocent as kissing seems this act could have led to us having sex before marriage. Even laying down together cuddling can trigger sexual temptation. Studies have proven people are more likely to engage in sexual activity when they are horizontal (lying down) as a opposed to vertical. I know what my sexual triggers are and so should you so that your enemy can’t take advantage of them. Once you know those weaknesses, set boundaries for each of them so you remove the opportunity for the enemy to tempt you.

 4.    Find a good accountability partner.

God never intended the life of a believer to exist alone without partnership. That’s why He even says in Hebrews 10:25 “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” We need one another to sharpen each other, encourage each other, and lift each other to be all God has called us to be. I was fortunate in my college days to have two friends who checked on me regularly to make sure I was staying true to my purity commitment. There’s something about having a friend holding you accountable that causes you to think twice about wrong actions. We all need accountability, so find a trusted companion to hold you to your purity commitment.
